Safety remains of critical importance to the mining sector worldwide.  However, while top of mind for every mining industry executive, our examination of mine safety programs around the world finds that initiatives often fail to address the important elements of behavior and consequences.

Our approach to safety is embedded deep within our methodology.  By taking a holistic view, we address procedures and systems to promote safe production but more critically we address the hardest issue of changing behaviors.  By impacting both “hearts and minds”, we instill the right mindset and the end result – we make safety a culture within our clients.  

What we find 

• Safety is not seen as a primary driver of the business
• Safety management systems are driven by reporting; they lack steering pro-active behaviors
• On the floor behaviors not in line with standard safety practices
• Training mechanisms, including safety is statutory but does not match business or safety needs
• Supervisory behaviors are inadequate and reactive to issues; very little time spent on safety and avoidance of addressing critical safety issues
• Roles and responsibilities for safety unclear / poorly defined
• Current incentive schemes do not encourage safe behaviors
• Shift patterns and total weekly hours worked are in conflict with the safety aspects of the job

What we do

To build an organization with a sustainable safety-driven culture, we:

• Align organization and ensure safety key focus top down
• Establish operational discipline and compliance to a Safety Management Operating System with tools for measurement and KPIs 
• Establish appropriate safety and execution organizational structure in place
• Extensive training and education at all levels
• Engage supervisors and operators by using discovery learning maps and techniques – at the point of execution to reinforce required behaviors
• Ensure safety processes align with changing operational requirements
